DESCRIPTION
This book contains contributions that on one hand represent modern
developments in the area of mathematical morphology, and on the other
hand may be of particular interest to an audience of (theoretical)
computer scientists.
The introductory chapter summarizes some basic notions and concepts of
mathematical morphology. In this chapter, a novice reader learns,
among other things, that complete lattice theory is generally accepted
as the appropriate algebraic frame work for mathematical morphology.
In the following chapter it is explained that, for a number of cases,
the complete lattice framework is too limited, and that one should,
instead, work on (complete) inf-semilattices
Other chapters discuss granulometries, analytical aspects of
mathematical morphology, and the geometric character of mathematical
morphology. Also, connectivity, the watershed transform and a formal
language for morphological transformations are being discussed. This
book has many interesting things to offer to reaserches in computer
science, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering and other
disciplines.

metrics for scoring, for both textual & non-textual -- layout
segmentation, logical labeling, graphics, etc -- document-image
contents;

available worldwide, such as image data sets and associated
ground-truth & corpora;
-- algorithms & software tools, including error analysis &
visualization interfaces;

WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS
=======================
WORKSHOP
---------
Date : May 10, 9:00-12:30 h
Title : Combining Multiple Decisions in Pattern Recognition
and Adaptive Systems
Organisers : M. Kamel (U. Waterloo) and A. Campilho (U. Porto)
Objectives : To bring experts in the field of combining classi-
fiers, together to exchange their ideas and to de- fine
new directions for this important topic, which is
becoming necessary in some applications.
(http://www.fe.up.pt/~campilho/WORKSHOP/)
TUTORIAL 1
-----------
Date : May 10, 14:00-16:00 h
Title : Advanced Topics un Image Compression
Lecturers : M. El-Sakka (U. Waterloo)
Abstract : Over the last few decades, many good image compres- sion
schemes have been developed. These schemes are
currently used in commercial compression products/
systems, e.g., JPEG and GIF. The performance of these
schemes varies from low to high compression ratios with
low to high levels of degradation of decompressed
images. This tutorial provides audiences with a solid
understanding of the fundamentals and the princi- ples
of various digital still-image compression schemes.
Upon completion of the tutorial, the audiences will be
equipped with the fundamental knowledge that will help
them understand various compression tech- niques in such
a way as to optimize their use for a particular
application.
TUTORIAL 2
-----------
Date : May 10, 16:00-19:00 h
Title : Advanced Techniques in Image Segmentation
Lecturers : M. Forero Vargas and O. Rojas Camacho (U.N.Colombia)
Abstract : Review of advanced techniques in image segmentation:
Canny-Deriche, Marr-Hildreth, Shen-Castan and fuzzy
logic thresholding.
