The success of the 1993 meeting of the International Society for
Mathematical Morphology (ISMM), held in Barcelona, indicates a strong
interest for morphological approaches in image processing. This year,
we propose a 2-day course followed by a 3-day single-track meeting. A
detailed description of the course and a call for papers follow.

COURSE on MODELS AND SIMULATIONS OF RANDOM STRUCTURES
5-6 September 1994

This course is an introduction to the methods developed in
Geostatistics and Mathematical Morphology in order to model and
simulate random functions (scalar or multivariate) and random sets.
Physical situations that are relevant of these models will be
presented, as for instance: Fracture statistics of materials,
Scanning or transmission electron microscope images, including
multispectral images, Rough surfaces, porous or multiphase
media.
After an introduction to the Theory of Random Sets, various types
of models will be detailed. For each of them, theoretical and
practical aspects will be stressed:
- construction and properties of the models
- model validation, parameter estimation, and simulations
- examples of applications
Demonstrations of the simulation techniques on computer
workstations will provide illustrations.
This course requires only a basic knowledge in applied probability.
It is oriented towards the needs of scientists and engineers who want
to relate the physical behaviour and the texture of heterogeneous
media. They could be statisticians, physicists, experimentalists,
earth scientists, and also users of image analysis and synthesis for
all its domains of application (materials, biology, artificial vision,
CAD, remote sensing, geophysics, biometry, image coding, ...)

This workshop will give the opportunity to people involved with MM to
discuss its latest theoretical and practical developments. Original
contributions are sought on any novel research or application
involving MM. The Proceedings will be distributed to participants at
the conference, and a selection of the best papers will be published
separately in a special issue of the EURASIP journal "Signal
Processing" (ed. M. Kunt).

The scientific program will include the presentation of invited talks
and contributed papers. The goal of IWVF2 is to provide a discussion forum for
researchers and practitioners interested in 2D and 3D shape analysis. Original
and unpublished work in all aspects of this field is welcome. Main topics

Prospective contributors are encouraged to submit papers and to attend
IWVF2. Each paper will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee members by using
a blind procedure, implying that the identities of the authors will not be
known to the reviewers. Accepted papers will be discussed in a single track, or
presented as posters. All the presented contributions will be included in the
proceedings volume, which will be published in book form after the workshop.

PAPER SUBMISSION:
Authors should send four copies of a full paper to the IWVF2 Scientific
Secretariat, before November 1, 1993. Paper length should be limited to about
4000 words, since this is the estimated length of the proceedings version. The
first page should be anonymous, containing only the title of the paper, a
200-word abstract and 3-5 key words. A separate page including the title, the
name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s), the abstract, the keywords, and
the addressed topic of the workshop must accompany the paper. Papers submitted
by telefax or email will not be reviewed.

The registration fee is 600.000 Italian lire, if paid by March 31,
1994, and 700.000 Italian lire afterwards. Members of IAPR are given a 5%

The $2^{nd}$ International Workshop on Massive Parallelism: Hardware,
Software, and Application is sponsored by the "Progetto Finalizzato Calcolo
Parallelo e Sistemi Informativi" which was established by the Italian
"Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche" to advance knowledge in all areas
of parallel processing and related technologies.
In addition to technical sessions of submitted paper presentations, MP '94
will offer tutorials, a parallel systems fair, and commercial exhibits.
Call For Papers:
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts that demonstrate original unpublished
research in all areas of parallel processing including development of
experimental or commercial systems.

All manuscripts will be reviewed.
Manuscripts must be received by "January 15, 1994".
Submissions received after the due date or exceeding the length limit may
be returned and not considered.
Notification of review decisions will be mailed by "April 31, 1994".
Camera-ready papers are due "May 31, 1994".
Proceedings will be available at the Symposium.
Electronic submissions will be considered only if they are in LaTeX or
MS-Word 5 for Macintosh.
Tutorials:
Proposals are solicited for organizing full or half-day tutorials to be held
on during the Symposium.
Interested individuals should submit a proposal by January 15, 1994 to
the Tutorials Chair.
It should include a brief description of the intended audience, a lecture
outline and vita lecturer(s).
Parallel Systems Fair:
This all day event will include presentations by researchers who have parallel
machines under development, as well as by representatives of companies with
products of interest to the Massively Parallel Processing community.
A presentation summary should be submitted to the Parallel Systems Chair by

Implementing Continuous-Scale Morphology via Curve Evolution

In this work, a new approach to digital implementation of
continuous-scale mathematical morphology is presented.
The approach is based on discretization of evolution equations
associated with continuous multiscale morphological operations.
Those equations, and their corresponding numerical implementation,
can be derived either directly from mathematical
morphology definitions or from curve evolution theory.
The advantages of the proposed approach, over the classical
discrete morphology, are demonstrated.
